Can you spell check hand written notes in onenote? Or are you required to
convert handwritten notes into text before spell check will work?

You need to convert them to text first.

The actual spellchecking function doesn't work against handwritten content.

But OneNote (actually, it's the Tablet PC) does a conversion of the
handwriting behind the scenes, and stores several versions of a converted
word if there's any confusion or if there are multiple conversions
available. So it does try to ensure that mis-written words are still
searchable, etc.

When OneNote converts your handwriting to text it will ONLY convert it to
words that are already in the dictionary. Therefore, anything you write,
regardless of whether you spelled anything correctly, will appear as if
you have spelled everything correctly. It may pick the wrong words out of
the dictionary but it will think they are all spelled correctly.

Remember, this happens in the background even if you don't manually
convert the handwriting to text. Whatever OneNote picked out of the
dictionary as the most closely matching set of words will be what is
available for searching even if none of them are what you actually
intended.
