I feel that the ones that do work at the 4x5 size are generally those images that do not contain much visual information, and rely more on simpler compositional elements, rather than the more typical information-rich LF images. In my opinion, most 4x5 contact prints simply do not work as well as 5x7 or 8x10 contact prints because there is too much information in the image to be readily viewed at that size.

Lens choice also seems to have an effect. Wide angle-style, sweeping views cry out for an enlargement beyond 4x5 contact print size. The normal to longer lenses tend to isolate subject matter and create a simpler image that can sometimes be best appreciated in a more intimate size.

I make contact B&W prints from 4x5, 5x7 & 8 x10 as well as enlargements from each. I also make contact prints from 6 x 9, 120 negs. With subject matter from individual flower blossoms to one on my desk now of the Manhattan Bridge, these minatures are real gems, IISSM.

Noted photo connoisseur Elton John says he prefers miniatures. Contact prints have a smoothness and texture that is very difficult to get with enlargements, for rather obscure reasons, but it is genereally true.

There is simply no way print quality from small format cameras can equal LF, despite the fact I have 20 x 30 prints from my Leica shot on Tri X. They are excellent documentary prints, but they can not convey the same impact or WOW factor that smaller contact prints do.

It was a perfect day for being outdoors and for taking pictures--also a perfect day for shooting with a large format camera. High, thin clouds in the sky. Contrails. Long morning shadows. Bare trees and shrubs along the trail. A myriad details. Even shadows cast by gravel on the trail stood out. The day was still. No wind. Not a whisper. I had only a small format camera, 20mm lens, orange filter, and tripod and while I enjoyed photographing the views with the small camera, I wish I had had my friend's large format camera. A latter day William Henry Jackson. Oh, well.

I've really relished really large prints from 8x10. Remember the days when Hospitals and Universities would have 30x40'ish inch prints of their most prominent officers, founders and benefactors? I marveled at the largeness of those old prints and such sizes are usually what I print most today (20x30'ish and larger).

Around the mid 1980s I was the lead photographer for an internationally known medical group. Yousuf Karsh came in to photograph the founder we set the conference room to be his studio, we weren't allowed in while hewas working. I id have lunch with his assitant. Karsh was still working with 8x10, 14inch Commercial Ektar lens. His assistant, a portrait photographer with his own studio, was saying Karsh in his late '60s at the time would do better with a RB 6x7 Mamyia since he wasn't using camera movements and he could move his own tripod. The image we received was one of those 24 x 30 large portraits. Interestingly when the firm contacted Karsh for another print they were told, it wasn't one of his best works, or a well known preson so the image was destroyed. But 40 or so years ago the view camera was considered out of date.

In the summer of 2017 my friends, novice climbers, asked me to climb Elbrus with them. This is the highest mountain peak in Russia and Europe. The idea sounded great, especially because I have loved mountains since my childhood. But my campaign plan immediately included a large-format camera, with which I have been travelling for many years (mostly, of course, by car with a camera in the trunk).

At an altitude of 5300m on the saddle between two peaks, there was a serious question about turning back and going down. Fortunately, we found a refuge, once dropped from a helicopter in case of stormy weather. Having warmed up in it with hot tea and replacing the insoles in shoes with warm ones, we decided to continue the journey. I left a backpack with a large-format camera and took with me only the Leica camera and the flag of the Art of Foto Gallery.

This time, when the summit was storming, there was again a strong wind, but there were no clouds or blizzards. I set up a large-format camera and was photographed with the flag of the Art of Foto gallery. At that moment it was a triumph of film photography, when you realise that everything is possible!

The coupling of a digital camera to a large format camera has been recently discussed in other articles. The methods proposed basically use the large format camera as a lens system placed in front of the digital camera to shoot a single image. While this strategy can yield interesting results, it really falls short of the potentialities and it is not a solution for the problem at hand.

Why should you waste your time with this approach, when there are high-resolution cameras out there? Admittedly, this method requires you to shoot tens of images and move the rear standard accordingly: a tedious, error-prone task, an exercise in patience even.

There is another advantage over high-resolution digital cameras and it is the control of the focus plane. With a camera with a normal lens, the focus plane is parallel to the sensor. If you want to increase the depth of field of your image (something you usually need to do in the present context because rarely you need high-resolution out-of-focus images), you can only close your diaphragm. But you can do that only to a point, after which diffraction kicks in and makes your image as blurred as a pinhole image.
